Home For A Time (2023-)
Home for a Time is a collaborative photographic project examining young adults living in share houses across Australia. For decades share house living has been a rite of passage for young Australians, and was considered a valuable part of the transition into adulthood. Over the past twenty years, share house living has changed from being solely a temporary and jovial experience to a more permanent housing solution for many Australians.
With median house prices in many Australian cities being more than ten times the average Australian income, many young adults now face the reality that share house living will be their only viable option for permanent accommodation as they age into their 30s, 40s and beyond. However limited housing options are for young people today, share house living also has benefits, especially for marginalised people, some of who are neurodivergent, queer and people of colour.
Share house living can provide and develop supportive micro-communities, which is important in a society that is becoming more individualistic, consumerist and less tolerant of diversity.
With direct input from those depicted in the photos (in the form of writing, drawing and mixed-media) Home For a Time aims to reduce the divide between photographer and subject through more collaborative and participatory processes.
This series shows the viewer not only the people who are living in share houses, but also what they think and feel about their futures.
